Statement of Changes in Equity

The Statement of Changes in Equity shows how each part of equity moved from its opening balance to its closing balance over a period: profit earned, dividends declared, contributions and other movements. It also rolls retained earnings forward and checks the result against the Balance Sheet.

Where to Find It

  1. Click Treasury in the sidebar
  2. Open Financial Statements, then select Statement of Changes in Equity

You need the Treasury Financial Statements permission. The page title shows the currency, for example Statement of Changes in Equity (PHP).

Choosing the Period

Fromdate
First day of the period. Defaults to the first day of the current month.
Todate
Last day of the period. Defaults to the last day of the current month.

Click Apply after changing the dates.

Reading the Statement

The statement is a matrix. Down the side are the movements: Opening balance, Profit for the period, Dividends declared, Contributions / movements, Other movements and Closing balance. Across the top is one column per equity account, a derived Retained Earnings column, and Total Equity. Each cell is the movement for that part of equity.

Underneath, Closing Retained Earnings and Total Equity are repeated, with a badge reading Reconciled when they agree with the Balance Sheet, or Not reconciled when they do not.

Seeing What Makes Up an Amount

Click any amount, including the Total Equity column, to open the Amount Breakdown. It explains how the figure for that movement and equity component is computed.

Apply Reporting Currency

Apply Reporting Currency translates the statement in place into another currency (IAS 21). Pick a Reporting currency and a Rate book (or keep the defaults) and click Apply. If a required rate is missing, the page says the translation is unavailable. Click Reset to functional to go back.

Exporting to Excel

Export to Excel downloads the statement for the applied period, in the reporting currency when one is applied.

How It Connects

Set up first

  • Chart of Accounts — each account of the Equity type becomes a column of the matrix.
  • FX Rates — the reporting-currency rates that Apply Reporting Currency needs.

Gets its data from

  • Income Statement — the profit for the period is the retained-earnings movement.
  • Journal Entries — posted journals to equity accounts are the dividend, contribution and other movements.

Feeds into

  • Balance Sheet — its Equity section is the check for the closing balances.
